School History

Sacred Heart School began in 1944 with 39 children enrolled

When Sacred Heart School began in 1944, 39 children were enrolled and the Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg, IN staffed the school.   Two sisters taught and the third sister was housekeeper.   As the school enrollment continued to grow, it was necessary to plan a new building.   A new structure was opened in 1954 that housed the Church, school, and convent.

Eventually a separate convent was built.   Sister Mary Louis Murer was the last Franciscan to minister in the parish, leaving in 1987.  After the sisters left the area, the separate convent building was also converted into classrooms.

Mrs. Joan Silverberg and Mrs. Mary Ann Harrison served as lay principals.  Another building was purchased by the parish and housed the library and computer lab.

After the new Church was built on the east side of Highway 61, the church on Main Street was converted into classrooms and a doublewide trailer was also used for classrooms.  Sister Jeannette Fennewald, SSND, became principal in 1996.  In 1999 the school moved to a new structure built near the new Church on Thompson Drive.  A Capital Campaign is trying to raise money to add extra classrooms, a gym, pre-school, and parish office space. The school staff has grown from two teachers to fifteen full-time and three part-time teachers, two aides, a secretary, scrip coordinator, and nurse. The school utilizes modern technology, best practices, and continues to grow and maintain exellence in all areas.
